Neuropathy / neuritis
Neuropathy or neuritis are conditions of nerves. Many or one nerve may be involved, depending on the disease process. Many types of disease can affect nerves. These include infection, immune-mediated causes, endocrinopathies (e.g. hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease), degenerative diseases, cancer, or nerve compression from disk disease or cancer. Since multiple diseases cause neuropathy or neuritis, it is important to undergo diagnostics to reach the appropriate diagnosis in order to institute directed therapy. Diagnostics include bloodwork, x-rays, electrodiagnostics. magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, and possibly a nerve/muscle biopsy.
